A great way to supplement her protein and fiber intake. At first, my senior mare ate this very well. Now that her teeth aren't as good as they used to be, she has a bit more trouble with it because it's so dry....

Frequently Asked Questions

It is important to provide your horse with enough roughage (hay and grass) spread out over the day and night to keep its digestive system healthy. Make sure your horse does not go more than 4–6 hours without roughage. If your horse has stomach ulcers, do not let it go more than 2 hours without roughage.

All Vitalbix products are high in fiber and low in starch and sugar.

Vitalbix Pure Lucerne+ encourages chewing and saliva production and supports healthy digestion. By stimulating saliva production and helping to regulate stomach pH, Vitalbix Pure Lucerne+ can help keep the stomach healthy.

We recommend Vitalbix Pure Lucerne+ for horses 1 year of age and older. Due to the size of the fibers, alfalfa may have a negative effect on the stomach of young foals. For horses under 1 year of age, choose alfalfa pellets instead of loose alfalfa.

Forage is the foundation of a healthy weight. Make sure your horse has unlimited access to forage, and avoid periods without it. In many cases, the cause of underweight is insufficient forage.

Is your horse getting an unlimited supply of high-quality roughage but still not gaining weight? If so, have your horse examined by a veterinarian to rule out health issues such as a worm infestation, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, reduced intestinal motility, a fungal infection in the intestines, or impaired liver or kidney function, etc.

Too much starch and sugar in your horse’s diet can disrupt its gut flora. This leads to reduced nutrient absorption from the feed. Adjusting the diet can help improve this situation. Limit feeds with high starch and sugar content, such as regular pellets and muesli. Combine various Vitalbix products for optimal results:

  • Vitalbix Daily Complete, Vitalbix Active+, or Vitalbix Breed & Grow for the necessary vitamins, minerals, and amino acids
  • Vitalbix Nutrimash for prebiotic fiber, extra calories, and extra B vitamins
  • Vitalbix Pure Lucerne+ for extra fiber, calories, and protein
  • Vitalbix Linseed Oil as a source of extra calories (increase the amount gradually)

The foundation of a healthy weight is high-quality forage. If your horse is overweight, it is likely consuming too much or too nutrient-dense forage. To help your horse lose weight, it is important to limit the amount of forage, increase exercise, and avoid giving any treats. The frequency of roughage feeding is also important for an overweight horse; make sure your horse is never without roughage for more than 4–6 hours. Additionally, it’s important that your horse doesn’t lose weight too quickly. Preferably choose a balancer to provide your horse with the necessary nutrients, such as Vitalbix Daily Complete, and mix it with 100–300 grams of Vitalbix Pure Lucerne+ for extra fiber to stimulate chewing. Do not give treats such as carrots, apples, or products rich in starch and sugars. If possible, opt for a lower-nutrient type of hay.

  • Vitalbix Daily Complete for essential vitamins, minerals, and amino acids
  • Vitalbix Pure Lucerne+ for extra fiber

Protein requirements for horses are expressed in VREp (digestible crude protein for horses). Protein requirements vary by breed and by individual horse and depend, among other factors, on the level of exercise. Protein requirements increase with heavier workloads. Young, growing horses, breeding stallions, and pregnant mares have higher protein requirements. Since individual requirements vary from horse to horse, it is important to closely monitor your horse’s condition and muscle development. If your horse is lagging behind in muscle development, its diet may contain too little protein.

Your horse's diet may also contain too much protein. An excess of protein in the diet puts a strain on the kidneys, among other things. You may notice this because your horse is urinating frequently or more than usual.

Alfalfa contains more calcium than phosphorus—16 grams to 3 grams per kilogram of alfalfa, a ratio of 5.3 to 1.

When you feed 2 to 3 kg of Vitalbix Pure Lucerne per day (for a horse weighing 500 to 600 kg), you do not need to add any additional phosphorus-rich products (such as flaxseed or wheat bran) to the diet, provided that the hay also contains relatively high levels of calcium and low levels of phosphorus. We recommend supplementing the diet with phosphorus-rich products or a phosphorus supplement if you feed more than 3 kg of Vitalbix Pure Lucerne+ per day. Would you like to know how to do that? Feel free to ask us for advice; email us at [email protected].

We recommend supplementing the diet of horses aged 1 year and older with Vitalbix Pure Lucerne+. In young foals, the stomach lining is still developing, and alfalfa may be too “harsh” on the stomach due to the size of its fibers. For horses under 1 year of age, choose alfalfa pellets instead of loose alfalfa.

What's included?

Vitalbix Pure Lucerne+ contains only healthy, natural ingredients and contains NO added sugars (molasses), soy, grains, artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives, or synthetic preservatives.

Composition

Artificially dried alfalfa (stems and leaves), cold-pressed flaxseed oil (3%)

Artificially dried versus sun-dried

Artificially dried alfalfa has consistent quality and a higher nutritional value than sun-dried alfalfa.

Alfalfa leaf

Vitalbix Pure Lucerne+ is made from the entire alfalfa plant, including both the stems and the leaves. The leaves of the alfalfa plant contain the most nutrients, which is why we love to use them in our products! The leaves are finely ground during the drying and milling process and mixed with the stems.

Vitamin and mineral ratios

It is not only the exact levels of vitamins, minerals, and trace elements that are important for a healthy diet; the ratios between these nutrients are just as important. If these ratios are out of balance, the nutrients will compete with one another, which can lead to deficiencies and, consequently, health problems.

Mireille - Mivadami Boarding Stable and Horse-Assisted Coaching
Last year, we opened a new boarding stable in Elburg. Since we were taking in many different horse breeds with varying training intensities, I was looking for a feed that could provide all the horses with a tailored diet. In my opinion, standard basic or sport pellets couldn’t meet this need. In particular, the more delicate breeds would end up getting too much (unnecessary sugars/starch), while the horses competing at a high level in sport would be lacking essential nutrients. That’s why I went looking for a suitable solution, and I found it in Vitalbix! In addition to Vitalbix as a concentrate, all horses receive unlimited roughage, something I consider very important; I use two types to better meet their needs. I’ve been feeding Vitalbix right from the start of my stable. I feed the Daily Complete to all horses, and those who need it also receive the Active Plus (this is especially for older, weaker, sensitive, or highly trained horses). When new horses arrive, I always ask the owner to bring some feed from the old stable to ensure a smooth transition. I haven’t encountered any problems with this yet. Many horses have thrived on this diet, and those that arrived here with conditions like stomach ulcers, for example, are now completely symptom-free. A horse that had eczema last year hasn’t had any itching this year and is still riding without an eczema blanket. For me, this confirms that this is the right way to feed.

Marco & Mascha - Wagemakers Equine Spa
Our three horses are all very different, and we were getting a bit stuck with our old feeding routine.Someone told us that Vitalbix has a department where you can ask for advice. We did that right away. In the email, we described how we care for our horses, what we do with them, how they’re stabled, how old they are, etc. Very shortly after, we received a clear email explaining which products and how much we should give them. And wow! They’re doing so well! They’re at a healthy weight, their coats look great, and they love eating it. With just a small amount per feeding, such great results. Very little is needed because it’s made with high-quality nutrients.Because of the excellent results with our horses over the past few years, we also use it for the horses staying for extended periods at our Wagemakers Nispen Horse Spa. We are therefore proud to have hung the Vitalbix sign above our own sign.

Pauline - Paddock Paradise by the Sea
I’ve been feeding my horses Vitalbix horse feed for some time now, and we’re huge fans of the products! Our horses live at home on our Paddock Paradise, and I believe good nutrition is very important. I try to feed my horses as naturally as possible, and Vitalbix horse feed fits in perfectly with that. I feed the horses Daily Complete, NutriMash, and Fiber Mix, and our foal gets Breed & Grow. After switching to Vitalbix, the horses started eating their feed with gusto again, and I noticed they became fitter and had more energy. When our foal first arrived, he had a very dull coat, but after two weeks on Breed & Grow, his coat started to shine beautifully, and he’s clearly doing well on the feed!
